Playing
Do I need to download an app?
No. Scan the QR code on the venue's screen with your phone's camera and your team's page opens in the browser. There is nothing to install and no account to make.
How do we score points?
A normal night is eight rounds of ten questions, one point for each right answer. Each team also picks two Joker rounds that score double. On top of that there are two special segments: The Streak and The Cold Case (see below). Teams with the same total share a place.
What is The Streak?
The host names a subject and you write down as many right answers as you can. They count in a row from the top: one point for each right answer, up to ten, and the first wrong one stops the count - so put the answers you are surest of first.
What is The Cold Case?
A puzzle with a new clue after every round. The sooner your team solves it, the more it is worth: 10 points after Round 1, then 9, 8, 6, 4, 3, 2 and 1. A team solves it once, and a Joker does not double it.
What is a special quiz, where we answer on our phones?
On some nights teams type their answers on the phone instead of on paper. The answers save as you go and the quizmaster marks from them. Each round closes by itself when its answers are read out.
What happens if I leave the answer page on a special quiz?
While a round is open, stay on the answer page. If you leave it for more than five seconds that round scores zero for your team. A message or call banner that does not take you off the page is fine. If you had to take a call, tell the quizmaster - they can put it right.
Why does my phone stay awake on a special quiz?
A locked screen counts as leaving the page, so the answer page asks your phone to keep the screen on while you are on it. If your phone refuses, switch Auto-Lock to Never for the night and turn off Low Power Mode.
Our team name is already taken tonight - what do we do?
Add something to it (the table number, say). The host can also add a team by hand.
Where can I see how my team is doing across the season?
On the national league page. Scores from every venue are added together by team name; capitals, spaces and punctuation are ignored, so "The Quizzards" and "THE QUIZZARDS!" are the same team.
Hosting
What does a venue need?
A computer (Windows, Mac or Linux) on the venue's wifi, a TV or projector for the picture, sound from that TV or from the computer into the venue's speakers, and a phone or iPad for marking. Teams use their own phones.
Is there anything to install first?
The download from your Venue page carries everything it needs - including its own copy of Python - so there is nothing else to install. Unzip it and start it.
What if the internet drops in the middle of the night?
Once tonight's quiz is on the laptop the show carries on without the internet. Only the scoring needs it, and if the wifi blips the taps are queued and sent as soon as it is back.
When can we download the quiz?
Once Fact or Fiction has booked it onto your night and ticked it paid. It becomes available up to two weeks ahead, so a slow connection has plenty of time. Press Download now under Coming up.
We have an AV computer that runs all our screens and music. Can it run the quiz?
Yes. Put the app on the AV computer and start it from the media system's launcher only when the quiz is wanted (it never starts by itself, so it won't interrupt your music and videos). The host's laptop finds it on the network and just controls the night. A clicker works in either computer.
What happens to the quiz after the night?
When the host presses End quiz the results go to the server and the league, and the quiz is deleted from the laptop. The marking link stops working.
Who marks the answers?
Usually the host, or a helper, on a phone or iPad using the scoring link. On a special quiz night typed answers are marked automatically (with allowance for spelling) and the marker only checks the close calls.

Can a venue make its own quizzes?
No. Every quiz is written by Fact or Fiction's own content creators and booked onto your night. A venue receives and plays it.
